2k operations, 190 charged over 'fake MyKad' in last two years

PARLIAMENT | Over 2,000 enforcement actions led by the National Registration Department from 2022 until October this year have led to charges brought against 190 individuals for possession of a fake MyKad or one that belonged to another person.

Speaking during the Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, Deputy Home Minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah revealed that 2,103 operations were conducted nationwide during the period, including in cooperation with the Immigration Department, MACC and police.

“From the total number of operations, 1,606 were conducted by NRD, while 457 were joint operations,” he said to a supplementary question from Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (PN-Besut).

“As a result of the operations, the NRD arrested 519 individuals for offences under the National Registration Regulations 1990.

“From the number (arrested), 190 were charged - 130 with possession of a fake identification card, and 60 with possession of a MyKad that belonged to another person,” said Shamsul.

He added the data had prompted the government to look into a new MyKad design with improved security features.

Earlier, Shamsul, in response to Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara) said the government is in the process of conducting market research to obtain the best value for money in the production of the new MyKad design.

The NRD introduced the MyKad on Sept 5, 2001, as a document that incorporates both photo identification and fingerprint biometric data on an in-built computer chip embedded in a piece of plastic.
