PN MP suggests M'sians re-register for MyKad to address ID fraud

PARLIAMENT | Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) has proposed that all Malaysians undergo re-registration of their MyKad to combat the issue of fake documents.

During today’s debate session in the Dewan Rakyat, the Perikatan Nasional lawmaker suggested that each Malaysian receive a new digital identification card after re-registration.

“The biometric application can detect and transmit information directly to the National Registration Department. We can learn from Germany to implement this programme,” he stated.

Earlier in his speech, Ku Rahman (above) addressed the persistent problem of fake MyKads in the country, urging the Home Ministry to clarify the actions taken to resolve the issue.

“On July 19, The Star reported the case of an Indonesian man sentenced to 20 years in prison for possessing a fake MyKad.

“In the past five years since 2019, there have been 477 reported cases of fake identification cards allegedly produced by agents in the Klang Valley.

“I suspect that this number is just the tip of the iceberg. So, what are the government and the Home Ministry doing about it?” he questioned.

The Dewan Rakyat is currently debating portions of the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which is expected to be put to a vote today.

One specific amendment regarding children born in Malaysia to non-Malaysian permanent residents - which allows them to apply for citizenship rather than granting it automatically - has drawn criticism, including from Sabah Muda member and former stateless person Wong Kueng Hui.
