PM candidate not a priority for PN leadership: Tuan Ibrahim

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has called for calm amid internal arguments within Perikatan Nasional about who their prime minister candidate should be.

He said there was no need to squabble over the matter as there are more important things at hand.

“This matter is not a priority among the leaders (in the PN supreme council) to discuss. This is because we believe and are committed that now is the time to strengthen parties, get close to the people, and champion the rakyat,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He claimed that the people are currently suffering because the government has not abided by its manifesto, and is hoping for PN to get back in power.

“So we don’t have time to discuss this matter (prime minister candidate) and disappoint the people who are strained by multiple issues,” he added.

Who’s PM-designate?

Previously, Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu had said that party president and PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin was their sole candidate for prime minister.

This prompted PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin to retort that PN’s prime minister candidate should come from PAS, citing the party’s larger number of parliamentary seats and stronger grassroots.

Gerakan objected to this rationale and backed Muhyiddin as the prime minister candidate.

Gerakan president Dominic Lau said today that he would raise the differences in opinion at the next PN supreme council meeting next month.

Geared up for Sabah

On a separate matter, Tuan Ibrahim said that PAS had confidence in Bersatu’s leadership regarding the upcoming Sabah state election.

He said Bersatu’s recently concluded party elections will motivate PN to formulate a strategy for the sake of Sabahans.

In the last Sabah state election, PN contested as part of a coalition with BN and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), known as Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.

It won the state election.

However, after the 15th general election, Sabah Bersatu was fractured when Chief Minister Hajiji Noor switched sides to support Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister after initially pledging support for Muhyiddin.
