After cadet's death, UiTM pledges to review Rotu programme

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) will review its Reserve Officer Training Unit (Rotu) programme following the death of one of its students after allegedly being abused by his trainer.

In a statement today, UiTM said the university is ready to accommodate the ongoing probe.

"In light of this incident, the university has taken proactive steps to review and strengthen procedures related to training and monitoring mechanisms for uniformed co-curricular activities.

"The university management is deeply saddened by this incident and pledges its full cooperation with the authorities in their investigation into this case," it said in a statement today.

The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) has pledged to investigate the case thoroughly and take further action.

"MAF has confirmed that the case is under investigation by the Provost Marshal's Branch of the Royal Malaysian Air Force.

"MAF emphasises that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly and that no party involved in the case will be shielded or compromised. Legal action will be taken against those found guilty," it said.

It urged the public to give it space to conduct a thorough investigation so that justice can be delivered to the victim and to not make speculations that could disrupt the investigation.

Abuse claims

Earlier today, it was reported that UiTM Rotu cadet Muhammad Amir Rusyaidi Muhammad Zaidi passed away on Nov 13 after allegedly enduring a gruelling training session.

Amir’s father Muhammad Zaidi Abdul Rahman claimed in a police report that the cadet had been subjected to physical abuse, including being stepped on the chest, forced to perform horse-like movements with a trainer riding on his back, and ordered to jump like a kangaroo.

These activities on Nov 10 were allegedly captured on video by the trainer.

The 25-year-old cadet allegedly collapsed following the training and was in a coma until his death.

The police are also investigating the case as sudden death.
