Former Umno supreme council leader Zahidi Zainul Abidin has confirmed that he has become a PKR member almost two years after expressing his intention to join the party.

While he is without a party position, the former deputy communications and multimedia minister said he had received PKR’s blessings to begin a massive expansion of the party in Perlis.

"We are eyeing to establish 400 more PKR branches in Perlis by the next general election, of which more than 100 would be in Padang Besar.

"This is part of our ambition to deliver this state to the unity government in the next election," Zahidi was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

He said PKR only has around 60 branches in Perlis, while Umno has around 300.

The former Padang Besar MP ceased to be an Umno member after he contested as an independent for the seat in the last general election after being dropped as a BN candidate.

In January 2023, he applied to join PKR.

At the time, Perlis PKR vice-chief Asrul Nizan Abd Jalil warned the party against taking in "trash can leaders" like Zahidi.

Speaking to the media today, Zahidi said his PKR membership had received the approval of party president Anwar Ibrahim.

He added that all his efforts for the party are voluntary.
