Source: Junior officer in medical visa scandal found with RM1 mil assets

An investigation by the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) into the medical visa scandal has uncovered that a junior Immigration Department officer possesses nearly RM1 million in assets, according to a source.

The discovery was made after the EAIC recorded statements from several Immigration Department personnel.

“We in the Immigration Department were shocked to learn that a junior officer involved in medical visas had acquired assets amounting to about RM1 million,” said the source.

Describing the scandal as seemingly bottomless, the source added, “The more we dig, the more we uncover.”

The source, who is a senior officer at the department’s headquarters in Putrajaya, confirmed that the EAIC has seized dozens of boxes containing documents related to medical visa payments.

Most junior officers are stationed at service counters.

Malaysiakini has reached out to the Immigration Department and the EAIC since last week for comments. However, no response has been received as of the time of publication.

Special task force

Previously, the EAIC established a special task force to investigate alleged misconduct linked to the scandal, where immigration officials allegedly issued medical tourism visas to migrants without complying with procedures.

A full investigation is being conducted under subsection 27(4) read together with subsection 26(3) of the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission Act 2009.

The task force also raided the Immigration Department’s Visa, Pass, and Permit Division in Putrajaya and seized 156 files related to Social Visit Pass (Medical Treatment category) applications.

In addition to Immigration officers, the investigation also involves several officials from the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry.

The Immigration Department has assured that it will not compromise on taking action against its officers involved in the syndicate.

The EAIC is a federal statutory body with the authority, among other powers, to investigate complaints of misconduct by law enforcement officers or agencies.
