TikTok account owner Rayyan Wong has been released on police bail while investigations continue on his post that allegedly incited public anger and tarnished the royal institution.

Harian Metro quoted Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain who confirmed the 22-year-old from Johor was released from lock-up after a court rejected the police’s remand application.

“He (Wong) has apologised. Therefore, he was released on bail,” Razarudin told the Malay daily today.

He reiterated investigations against Wong’s allegedly offensive post that touched on the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, acting Johor sultan, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, will continue under the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

According to Harian Metro, Wong posted an apology on his TikTok account.

“Geng, I apologise for the statement about eating at a restaurant that doesn’t have a halal certificate. It turns out that it actually has a halal certificate,” he said, believed to be in reference to a decades-old Johor Bahru restaurant famed for its asam pedas.

“Once again, I apologise for my mistake in not doing further research.

“I have taken down the video, which has now reached two million views. I will be more careful from now on and will not spread false information,” said Wong.

It was previously reported that Wong was arrested at his house in Johor on Tuesday and police also confiscated his phone, a Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Putrajaya has consistently maintained that limits on freedom of speech include matters of race, religion, and royalty (3R), in response to criticisms of enforcement against social media postings.
