'Manipulating religion': PAS plan to rally against Nga, Yeoh slammed

PKR Youth has slammed PAS for planning to hold a rally against two DAP ministers tomorrow, saying the Islamist party is trying to manipulate religion for its political interests.

“This rally is seen as raising a culture of fear and playing up religious sentiments in a way that can create disunity among the public,” said the wing’s Religious Bureau chief Ashraf Hadi in a statement.

He was responding to PAS Youth deputy chief Mohd Hafez Sabri, who announced on Tuesday that the party is organising a protest in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, against DAP leaders Hannah Yeoh and Nga Kor Ming.

According to Hafez, the rally is over a sense of feeling “threatened” and intends to highlight statements related to Nga and Yeoh that purportedly posed a threat to Islam.

This was concerning Yeoh’s autobiography “Becoming Hannah” which Hafez said contains elements of Christian proselytisation, while Nga was condemned for a Christmas celebration at a government office.

Yeoh, who is the youth and sports minister, recently lost her defamation suit against former police chief Musa Hassan. He alleged Yeoh was trying to turn Malaysia into a Christian nation, among others.

Adding further, Ashraf said the narrative behind tomorrow’s demonstration not only fails to address the real issue but would tarnish Islam’s image as a religion for all.

He said those who champion Islam should focus on more pressing issues such as improving the people’s livelihood, education system, and economic development.

“Lastly, we would like to call all quarters to reject any attempt to manipulate religion for narrow political interests.

“Instead, we should focus on issues that benefit all, strengthen harmony in the country, and fight for justice for all.”
