Cops confirm body found in Banting river is of missing 15-year-old girl

Police have confirmed that the decomposed body found in a river in Banting on Dec 28 is Yap Xin Yuan, a 15-year-old who went missing on Dec 22.

Three suspects, including the victim’s boyfriend, have been remanded in relation to the case.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the Chemistry Department conducted a DNA analysis last Thursday which confirmed her identity.

“The DNA test came out positive. The family will be claiming her remains from Banting Hospital later this evening,” he said in a statement today.

Yap was reported missing on Dec 22 after attending a lion dance training session at Batu 11 basketball court in Cheras on Dec 19.

The victim’s boyfriend had lodged the police report.

On Dec 28, Hussein said his team discovered a body at the Sungai Changgang flood mitigation project in Kuala Langat in a state of decomposition and could not be identified physically.

Following the discovery, Hussein said the case had been reclassified under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, with the motive still under investigation.

“Three suspects, aged 16, 20 and 51, including the victim’s boyfriend, have been remanded for seven days until Jan 5,” he added.
