UMMC defends raising patient care fees, cites escalating costs

Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) has defended its decision to raise patient fees for procedures, treatments and services.

In a statement, the hospital, which is under the purview of the Higher Education Ministry, attributed the decision to rising costs - particularly advanced medical technology, consumables and medical supplies and operations.

“We continuously invest in state-of-the-art equipment, innovative therapies, and advanced diagnostics to provide our patients with the most cutting-edge care available,” it said.

As for consumables and medical supplies, UMMC pointed out that its prices have escalated substantially globally, which had an impact on the hospital’s expenditure.

“As for our operations, we are maintaining a safe and modern facility for our patients, students and staff - which requires ongoing investments in facility upgrades, maintenance, facility management, utilities and ensuring compliance with the highest safety standards,” UMMC stated.

Yesterday, MalaysiaNow reported that UMMC has announced an increase of up to 70 percent in patient fees for procedures, treatments and services.

Citing a report by the Chinese daily Guang Ming Daily, the hospital’s ward fees are to be raised by 60 percent, from RM120 to RM300.

Fees for follow-up treatment at specialist clinics are to rise from RM15 to RM50, an increase of 70 percent.

Financial assistance

On that note, UMMC acknowledged that its recent decision may create unease among the public and stakeholders but urged those concerned to reach out to its Finance Department to understand the changes and explore available financial assistance options.

“Financial assistance options are available. Healthcare costs can be a significant burden and we are committed to helping our patients navigate these challenges.

“There are various financial assistance programmes, including payment plans and options for medical, social and welfare support for underprivileged patients.

“And patients currently benefiting from subsidies for our medical treatments will not be impacted,” UMMC said.
