Explosion rocks Klang chemical factory, toxic yellow smoke released

An explosion rocked a chemical factory in Klang earlier today, causing toxic smoke to be released.

According to the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director, Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, the department received a distress call at around 4.30pm at Taman Perindustrian Kapar Bestari, Klang, Selangor.

“The explosion occurred in the storage area in front of the factory.

“Upon arriving at the scene, our personnel encountered yellow smoke that caused irritation to the eyes,” he said.

Due to the hazardous conditions, Mukhlis said the firefighters had to wait for the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) team to arrive.

“The team reached the site at 8pm and conducted tests, which confirmed normal levels of chemical exposure.

“They later identified the burnt material as recycled acid,” he explained.

Mukhlis also added that a tanker lorry was destroyed in the explosion.

“The Hazmat team is still monitoring the situation and is awaiting the arrival of the Environment Department to assess the site further,” he added.

There were no injuries or fatalities.
