Avoid speculating on mall shooting to prevent public anxiety - IGP

Police have advised the public not to speculate on the shooting that took place at a shopping mall in Setia Alam, Selangor, last night.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said speculating on the case could cause unnecessary public alarm.

"We understand that this incident has raised concerns among the public. However, we urge everyone not to make speculations that could create anxiety," he told Bernama today.

Razarudin said security measures at shopping malls and other public places nationwide will be tightened following the incident.

He added that auxiliary police officers and security personnel at such establishments have been instructed to remain vigilant against suspicious activities.

"Regarding last night's incident, Selangor police have identified the suspect, and various police units are on the ground tracking his whereabouts.

"We have also informed police in neighbouring states and border authorities to remain alert," he said.

A shooting was reported at a shopping mall in Setia Alam at 10.50pm yesterday, injuring a cleaner.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan today revealed that the suspect is a local male in his 30s with a fair complexion and has 11 prior records related to drug and criminal offences.

The case is being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 and Section 307 of the Penal Code.
