Report: Ex-MCA Youth leader quits, joins Bersatu with supporters

Former MCA Youth secretary-general Leong Kim Soon announced his resignation today, before reportedly leading a large group of supporters to hand over their membership forms to Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin.

His announcement on Facebook today simply reads “I officially announce resigning from MCA, effective today”.

According to Sinchew Daily, he then led his supporters to submit over 100 membership forms to Hamzah during a Bersatu buka puasa event in Janda Baik, Bentong.

The event was also attended by several local MCA leaders, who reportedly told the media that they were there to support Leong’s decision to join Bersatu.

Leong was previously the political secretary to former MCA leader Liow Tiong Lai during the latter’s tenure as party president and cabinet minister. He also held several party positions including MCA Youth secretary-general, Pahang MCA Youth chief, and MCA spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Hamzah reportedly announced Leong would be appointed as chairperson for Bersatu’s associate members’ wing in Bentong and Pahang, and encouraged him to recruit more members.

He also highlighted Leong’s extensive political experience in his speech and his status as a Bentong native with extensive connections.

“I am confident Bersatu can win the Bentong parliamentary seat in the next election, and even give a good showing in Pahang,” he reportedly said.

Yesterday, MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon warned that any MCA member who joins another party would be immediately expelled, even without submitting a resignation letter.

Leong’s defection to Bersatu is only the latest in recent months, with past defections including former Sembrong MCA Youth chief Eugene Lim in December last year.
