The government must immediately investigate the technical disruption that a train on the Kelana Jaya LRT Line experienced at the Abdullah Hukum Station yesterday, said MCA Youth deputy chief Mike Chong.

“This (incident) follows mere hours after the collapse of a wall panel at Masjid Jamek LRT station during the rainstorm.

“Apologies without real action are no longer acceptable. The authorities’ slow response only deepens concerns about passenger safety.

“It’s time for immediate intervention and a comprehensive action plan to restore trust in the public transport system,” he said in a statement today.

Yesterday, a video went viral on social media showing train passengers screaming, with the train emitting a loud noise and smoke.

Earlier, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd confirmed that the train had experienced a technical disruption, which caused small plumes of smoke and a loud noise.

The rail operator said the incident occurred at 10.43pm and was caused by damage to Train No 84’s power collector assembly. No injuries were reported.

Rapid Rail also apologised for the inconvenience experienced by passengers and pledged to continue improving its services.

The incident was preceded by another - where a wall panel at the Masjid Jamek LRT station collapsed during heavy rain and winds at 4.04pm.

No injuries were reported from that incident, with Rapid Rail saying it did not involve major structural damage to the station.

‘What caused it?’

While thankful no one was harmed during the incident, Chong said public confidence in Rapid Rail continues to decline due to repeated service disruptions and a persistent lack of accountability.

He also urged the authorities to explain what caused the incident.

“Was this an electrical fire? Poor track maintenance? Questions on the train operator’s social media (page) went unanswered, with only apologies for the inconvenience caused.

“The Transport Ministry should be assuring the public and implementing further safety measures and dispatching assistance to areas in need,” Chong said.
