Insurance group assures expedited claims process for pipeline fire victims

The general insurance claims processes for those affected by yesterday’s massive gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya will be expedited, said the Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (Piam).

The trade association said the measure is being undertaken to ensure prompt financial relief for victims impacted by the inferno, which is said to have damaged 235 premises and 399 vehicles while more than 100 individuals sustained injuries.

Piam said the claims process would be sped up for all eligible motor, personal accident, retail fire, homeowners or householders’ insurance policyholders.

“While it’s too early to determine the full extent of the losses, insurers understand the distress and uncertainty faced by those affected.

“Affected policyholders are encouraged to contact their respective insurers for assistance and guidance on claims procedures and coverage details as soon as possible, even if they have not been able to return home,” it added in a statement today.

It also said support is available directly through insurers - via agents and brokers - or through existing online platforms such as the Digital Roadside Assistance application.

Emotional, financial toll

Piam chairperson Ng Kok Kheng said the general insurance industry is committed to making the claims process as smooth as possible to ensure that policyholders receive the necessary assistance.

“We recognise the emotional and financial toll this tragic event has had on families and business owners.

“We are anticipating a large number of claims as property and vehicle owners begin to head back to the affected area and are prepared to support them every step of the way,” he added.

A gas pipeline in Putra Heights caught fire yesterday morning, creating a massive blaze visible from several kilometres away.

The initial Fire and Rescue Department report stated that the fire was caused by a gas pipeline leak, with an estimated 500m section of the pipeline engulfed in flames.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has since announced RM2,500 as immediate relief for those whose houses have been damaged by the inferno, and RM5,000 for those whose houses have been completely destroyed.

Additional aid is still being discussed between the federal government, state government, and Petronas, which owns the pipeline.
