Minister hails M'sian spirit as temple, mosque open doors to victims

Both the temple and the Masjid Putra Heights had sheltered victims of the blaze, which left dozens injured and damaged more than a hundred houses and vehicles.

Thanking both the mosque and temple, Aaron said: “This effort reflects the spirit of unity, togetherness, and the humanitarian values that form the foundation of a harmonious Malaysian society.

“This event reminds us that unity is not just a slogan, but must be translated into actions that demonstrate a sense of responsibility and concern for one another,” he added.

Aaron emphasised that places of worship are not only for prayer but also serve as community centres, playing an important role in supporting society, especially during challenging times.

He further remarked that the actions taken by the mosque and temple prove that religious diversity is not an obstacle to unity, but rather a strength that unites Malaysians.

“In facing any challenge, we, as Malaysians, must always practice love and support for one another, regardless of religious or ethnic background.

“Efforts like these should serve as an example and inspiration for all parties to contribute to building a united and harmonious nation. This is the true Malaysia,” he added.

The minister’s remarks come amid heightened tensions over the relocation of a 130-year-old Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur for the construction of a mosque. This has led to polarised views and even threats of violence on social media.

Yesterday, the minister’s office filed a report with the MCMC over a social media user calling for a repeat of the May 13 racial clashes and chiding Indians as “stupid” for building hundreds of temples despite being a minority.

Echoing a similar view, Urimai chairperson P Ramasamy also highlighted how the spontaneous solidarity during the blaze exemplified how temples, mosques, churches, and other religious institutions serve as vital centers for humanitarian relief during crises.

“Throughout history, places of worship have functioned as more than just religious sanctuaries. They are community hubs, rallying points for aid, and pillars of support in times of need,” he added.

However, Ramasamy also criticised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his government over the relocation of the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple on Jalan Masjid India.

He said that, instead of recognising and preserving such institutions, the Madani government had prioritised political gain over social cohesion.

“The lesson here is clear: divisive politics that undermine the sanctity of religious institutions only weaken the fabric of society.

“Leaders must understand that these places are not mere structures, but lifelines for communities in distress.

“The spirit of compassion and service, as demonstrated by the Sri Maha Kaliamman temple (in Putra Heights) and the mosques, should serve as an example of true leadership - one that transcends race, religion, and political ambition,” he added in a statement.
