Umno veterans told to sprinkle love, not hate in Ayer Kuning

Umno Veterans’ Club has called on its campaign machinery to steer clear of hate politics during the Ayer Kuning by-election campaign in Perak.

Its secretary Mustapha Yaakub emphasised the importance of conducting the campaign with decorum, civility, and compassion.

“Don’t follow the tactics of opposition parties that attack recklessly and with hatred.

“Respect the opposing candidate and do not resort to personal attacks that could cause embarrassment,” he said in a statement today.

Addressing the Tapah division, Mustapha said the focus should be on promoting their “product” instead of running down the “products” of their rivals.

“We know our product is good. So, let us sell our product. There is no need to say others' products are bad - let alone belittle them,” he added.

New campaign strategy

He stressed that the entire machinery in the division should focus on the 3,000 veteran members in the Ayer Kuning state constituency.

Mustapha termed this as the "My Family are BN Voters" campaign strategy.

“Each veteran member of Ayer Kuning will act as a representative to their own family based on the formula 1+1+1+1 (1 member + 1 spouse + 1 child + 1 in-law).

“If this strategy works well, the veterans can contribute at least 6,000 votes to BN,” he pointed out.

The by-election for the Ayer Kuning seat, which is within the Tapah parliamentary constituency, was triggered by the passing of the incumbent lawmaker, Ishsam Shahruddin, 59, on Feb 22.

Isham was also the Tapah Umno division chief.

BN has named Yusri Bakir, the 54-year-old Tapah Umno secretary, as its candidate while Perikatan Nasional chose Tapah PAS chief Abd Muhaimin Malek to contest the seat.

PSM will also be contesting the seat. The party is fielding its deputy secretary-general KS Bawani.
