White House: Total tariffs on China now at 145pct

The United States’ tariff rate on Chinese imports now effectively totals 145 percent, the White House said, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported, citing local media.

A White House official confirmed to CNBC on Thursday that the US tariff rate on Chinese imports now effectively totals 145 percent, as 125 percent tariff comes on top of a 20 percent fentanyl-related tariff that was previously imposed on China.

The 145 percent duties apply across all goods imported from China, the official clarified. In addition, the US continues to maintain 25 percent tariffs on aluminium, automobiles and imports from Canada and Mexico that fall outside the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), along with 105 customs duties on all other global imports.

The announcement comes a day after US President Donald Trump declared a 90-day suspension of new tariffs on several other countries, opting instead to raise tariffs on Chinese imports from 104 percent to 125 percent.
