Fact-check: Did another newspaper also botch Jalur Gemilang?

The Chinese-language publication Sin Chew Daily has come under fire since yesterday after its front page illustration of the Jalur Gemilang was missing its iconic yellow crescent, which symbolises Islam as the official religion of the federation.

While the newspaper is being grilled for what it claimed was a "technical error", another Chinese daily - Kwong Wah Yit Poh - has also under scrutiny by netizens.

This came after Kwong Wah posted an online image - which has since been removed - showing the front page of its evening edition for yesterday. It featured a photo showing the national flag - also without its crescent in sight.

Screenshots of the image have since gone viral on social media applications, with many comparing it with Sin Chew’s blunder.

The Kwong Wah's front page featured two of its main stories for the day, one of which was on the state funeral for former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The image that caused controversy was for its article on Chinese President Xi Jinping's three-day state visit to Malaysia.

It is believed that the photo Kwong Wah used was of an electronic billboard at the Fahrenheit 88 shopping complex in Bukit Bintang.

Another photo that has been circulating online, which appears to be the original image used on Kwong Wah’s front page, showed the yellow crescent to be partly visible in the corner of the billboard.

In its depiction on the daily’s front page, however, that part of the billboard has been obscured by text that reads “Chairperson Xi”, which forms part of a longer headline that reads “Chairperson Xi, Malaysia welcomes you”.

Malaysiakini has reached out to Kwong Wah for comment.

Meanwhile, the Home Ministry said it is investigating Kwong Wah over the matter, in addition to investigating Sin Chew.
