PKR polls: Nik Nazmi loses Setiawangsa division chief role to Afdlin

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has lost the Setiawangsa PKR chief position to director-cum-actor Afdlin Shauki.

Afdlin (above, left) won with 631 votes to Nik Nazmi's 563.

According to PKR's results form, only 1,207 ballots were issued, although 1,640 people were eligible to vote.

In a statement, Nik Nazmi said he will appeal the election results.

Competitors in the party election, held from April 11 to 20, expected challenges involving ministers, as well as federal and state lawmakers.

Afdlin had told Malaysiakini that challengers eyed the replacement of incumbent office-holders who were said to be “too busy” with other duties.

Each division chief candidate will typically contest as a team comprising one deputy, one vice-chief, over a dozen committee members, as well as separate teams for the women's and youth wings.

Afdlin, on his second attempt to unseat Nik Nazmi, said his team of candidates had engaged with party members who claimed to have “never met” the Setiawangsa MP.

Other polls

In the Bukit Bintang party election, Deputy Unity Minister K Saraswathy lost the division chief position to Anwar Pawan Chik.

Anwar won with 807 votes to Saraswathy's 683, which was followed closely by Sivamalar Genapathy (664).

Saraswathy earlier announced her decision to contest in the Bukit Bintang division, citing her experience of 26 years serving the community there.

In the Batu divisional race, local MP P Prabakaran was bested by lawyer Asheeq Ali Sethi Alivi by a margin of 153 votes.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil won handily in Lembah Pantai uncontested.

Fahmi is also the Lembah Pantai MP.

In Nibong Tebal, PKR Women chief Fadhlina Sidek won the division chief post.

The education minister and local MP garnered 677 votes, compared to 335 for her rival Muttaqeen Mustafa and 72 for Navalan Abdullah.
