Malaysiakini journalist Nantha reinstated

Malaysiakini journalist B Nantha Kumar has been reinstated following an independent inquiry into his case.

Nantha, who had been on suspension with full benefits since March 5, resumed his duties yesterday.

In a statement, Malaysiakini’s board of directors said it had reviewed the findings of an independent domestic inquiry panel convened to consider disciplinary action against Nantha.

The board announced that it has accepted the panel’s decisions and recommendations.

"Among other measures, Malaysiakini will strengthen its policies in certain areas concerning investigative journalism," the statement read.

The board also expressed its appreciation to inquiry panel members Andrew Khoo, Masjaliza Hamzah, and Shamini Arumugam, as well as others involved in the process, for their time and effort.

The panel was assigned to review Nantha’s compliance with editorial protocols in the development of his articles.

On March 14, Nantha claimed trial to a charge of allegedly receiving a RM20,000 bribe as an inducement to refrain from publishing further reports on migrant syndicates.

The veteran journalist is known for exposing numerous migrant worker syndicates in the past.
