Adam's parting words to PKR Youth: 'Power not a tool for personal glory'

Outgoing PKR Youth chief Adam Adli Abdul Halim has cautioned members against the trappings of power, warning that betrayal of the people’s trust could undo all they have fought for, in his parting message to the wing.

Speaking to PKR Youth delegates gathered at the Berjaya Waterfront Hotel in Johor Bahru today, Adam reflected on his journey from opposition activist to federal lawmaker, reminding the wing of the responsibility that comes with being in government.

“The intention was none other than to continuously realign our intentions and principles, especially at that time, when we had only just entered our first year as part of the ruling power.

“Reminders like these are crucial. A life without reflection will drift aimlessly. Without self-examination, one is bound to lose their way,” the Hang Tuah Jaya MP said.

The message to members from 206 PKR Youth divisions nationwide was in line with the theme of his policy speech, “Building Madani, Towards Reformasi”.

Don’t repeat mistakes

Adam, who is stepping down after reaching the age limit for the youth wing, also warned of the risks of complacency and arrogance, which he said are traits that led to the downfall of previous regimes.

“If we take lessons from our own struggle, we know that what we fought against was never rooted in personal hatred or animosity towards any individual. Nor was it about personalities.

“What we opposed were the excesses, arrogance, injustices, and unchecked wrongdoing by a select few leaders who ignored the interests and feelings of the broader public,” said Adam, who is running for a post in the PKR central leadership council.

He stressed that holding power should not mean repeating the same mistakes.

“Let us constantly be reminded that the moment we turn our backs on the people, they will do the same to us.

“Should that happen, everything we’ve fought for, championed, and dreamed of would be in vain.”

His remarks came amid continued criticism from detractors who claim that PKR and its allies in the federal government have strayed from their reformist roots, particularly following their partnership with former rival BN.

Honour people’s trust

The former student activist known for his outspoken stance on issues such as abolishing PTPTN loans, reiterated that power must be wielded with integrity.

“Power is not a tool for personal glory, not for indulgence, nor for amassing wealth and dividing spoils that should rightfully return to the people. These are the disgraceful practices of the past that must not be repeated.

“If we betray that trust, and the people’s confidence in us is extinguished, even a thousand apologies may not be enough to win them back.

“That’s why we must tread carefully, lest we become despised by the very people who once stood behind us,” Adam stressed.

Yesterday, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh, in her keynote speech to officiate the youth and women’s wing congress, also reminded delegates not to sabotage the party from within.

She likened it to a ship that would sink if anyone bored holes into it for selfish gain.

PKR Youth delegates are expected to debate Adam’s policy speech later today, as voting continues for all central leadership positions.
