Bersatu to contest Sabah polls, has identified winnable seats - Azmin

Bersatu will be contesting in the 17th Sabah state election and has already identified potential seats, party secretary-general Azmin Ali said.

In a statement released last night, Azmin said that the decision was reached after a four-hour leadership meeting chaired by Bersatu president, Muhyiddin Yassin.

“Negotiations with Sabah political parties will continue to build strength and understanding for the prosperity and welfare of the people of Sabah,” Azmin said.

He said Bersatu is also working on forming a pact with several “experienced political parties with their own influence.”

“This will definitely increase the people’s confidence towards Bersatu, in preparing a leadership that can guarantee an excellent future for the nation,” Azmin said, without naming the political parties.

He stated that a negotiation committee, consisting of himself and Bersatu vice-president Radzi Jidin, will oversee and conclude the negotiations.

‘Local parties only’

On Thursday, Warisan assemblyperson Calvin Chong urged Sabah voters to reject Malayan political parties in order to secure autonomous rights similar to Sarawak.

In a statement, the Elopura representative referenced the declaration of cooperation between Petronas and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), congratulating Sarawak for successfully reclaiming its oil and gas rights, as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

“The people of Sabah must be aware and vigilant in making decisions for the upcoming 17th state election, which is not far away.

“Say no to Malayan parties so that Sabah will become more prosperous and progressive,” Chong said.

He also called on Sabahans to reject any local parties that collaborate with their Malayan counterparts in the upcoming Sabah polls.

“To date, only Warisan has confirmed it will contest the 17th state election without cooperating with any Malayan party. We are committed to the struggle for autonomous administration without any influence or interference from Malaya. Our house, we hold the keys,” he said.
