Saifuddin's WhatsApp hacked using foreign VPN: Police

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail’s WhatsApp account was hacked using a foreign virtual private network (VPN).

Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) acting director Hasbullah Ali said that after accessing the minister’s WhatsApp, the suspect sent his URLs to all his contacts on the app.

“So far, there have been no complaints of individuals suffering losses due to the incident. Swift action by the minister’s officers, who immediately reported the incident, prevented anyone from being duped.

“Police are investigating the case under Section 4(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997,” he told a media conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

On Monday, the home minister’s office said Saifuddin’s WhatsApp account had been hacked and that the matter had been reported to the authorities.

The case is the latest instance where the messaging and social media accounts of prominent politicians were purportedly taken over by hackers.

In February, Kelantan Menteri Besar Nassuruddin Daud’s WhatsApp account was purportedly hacked and used to solicit money.

In August 2022, the Telegram accounts of then-prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and foreign minister Saifuddin Abdullah were also hacked.

WhatsApp advises users to enable its two-step verification feature to help protect their accounts from unauthorised access.
