Refugee 'Long Tiger' sentenced to 12 years jail, caning for rape
A refugee who staged a daring escape from police custody in 2021 whilst awaiting trial for extortion was today sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment and five strokes of the cane for rape by the Muar Sessions Court.

According to Harian Metro, Abdul Hamim Ab Hamid, 36, who goes by “Long Tiger”, received the sentence for the offence committed four years ago.
The report said judge Irwan Suainbon imposed the sentence on the Rohingya man after the court found that the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt regarding the case against him.
In his judgment, Irwan said the decision was reached after the court found that the defence's case amounted to a mere denial.
"Moreover, the defence presented by the accused was unable to rebut the prosecution's prima facie case.
"After hearing oral and written submissions filed by both parties, the court in this case determined that the prosecution had successfully proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
"Furthermore, the court found that evidence from the accused's wife, who was also the 11th defence witness, was largely fabricated and unreliable," Irwan was quoted as saying.
According to the charge, Hamim was accused of raping a 19-year-old woman at a house in Taman Sri Jaya, Bukit Gambir, Tangkak, between 1pm and 2.05pm on Sept 26, 2019.
He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and caning.
Harian Metro also reported that deputy public prosecutor Arif Marzuki had earlier urged the court to take into account the public interest factor in the case, stating that the offence committed by the accused was extremely serious and had caused the victim significant trauma.
“It is even more repugnant that the accused raped the victim just days after she suffered a miscarriage. She was his employee, and yet he still subjected her to such treatment,” he argued.
During the proceedings, the court ruled that Hamim's prison term would take effect from the date of his arrest on Aug 7, 2021.
At present, the father of two is serving a four-year prison sentence after the Tangkak Magistrates' Court found him guilty under Section 388 of the Penal Code. He must complete that sentence before serving the one under Section 376(1).
Escaping custody
Harian Metro reported that on Jan 20, 2022, the same court had sentenced Hamim to 12 months' imprisonment for escaping from custody on Dec 15, 2021.
Malay Mail previously reported that two police officers responsible for Hamim’s detention were later suspended pending an investigation, following allegations of negligence in the discharge of their duties.
The report also stated that Hamim holds temporary residence status and has a refugee card issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
For absconding from authorities, Hamim was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Additionally, the report said that on June 1, 2022, the Muar High Court revoked a discharge not amounting to an acquittal previously granted by the Tangkak Magistrates’ Court on May 17.
The order was reportedly set aside after the court found that there had been an error in the issuance of the ruling related to the charge under Section 388 of the Penal Code.
