Ng's injury remains mystery as BAM takes wait-and-see approach

Is national men's singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong down with a knee strain or something worse, like an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury?

For now, speculation is rife that the 25-year-old has suffered an ACL injury and, if that is the case, will keep him out for another lengthy spell.

His injury remains a mystery for now as national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen has declined to comment on the matter, saying further details will only be shared once full information is available.

“I can’t comment on a player’s injury. I want to get all the details from the experts first, and then we will share the progress or how to move forward,” he told reporters at a training session in Kuala Lumpur today.

Earlier today, local news media reported that the 25-year-old may face a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to an ACL injury sustained during last week's Malaysia Masters at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

On May 22, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) confirmed that the 2022 Commonwealth Games singles silver medallist sustained a knee injury during his opening-round match against Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long at the Malaysia Masters.

A medical evaluation found that Tze Yong had sustained a knee strain and would be out of action for at least two weeks, pending further assessments.

Tze Yong, who only recently returned to competition after a long layoff, was starting to show promising signs of recovery before slipping awkwardly during the match against Ka Long, forcing him to retire while leading 4-3 in the second game after winning the first 22-20.

Tze Yong has suffered various injuries, including a muscle tear in his back followed by a spinal injury, since last year and underwent a long period of rest and rehabilitation before returning to action in the Badminton Asia Championship 2025 in Ningbo, China, last month.
