The investigations into Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's former aide Yusoff Rawther's report took place at the same time as the probe into accusations of drug trafficking and fake firearm possession against him, said Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain.

He explained that there was no need to take Anwar's statement as the police had already done so during the initial stages of the investigation.

"At that stage, the Royal Malaysia Police submitted the proposed charges for both cases to the Attorney-General's Chambers and was satisfied that the evidence available at the time was sufficient to charge Yusoff without calling any other party to complete the investigation," he said in a statement today.

In 2021, the former research assistant filed a civil suit alleging that Anwar sexually assaulted him at the PKR president’s office in October 2018.

Yesterday, the Kuala Lumpur High Court acquitted Yusoff of drug trafficking and possession of two imitation pistols charges, with judge Jamil Hussin ruling that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case on both charges.

According to Free Malaysia Today, the judge said the prosecution failed to prove that Yusoff had knowledge, custody, and control of the drugs and fake firearms.

Yusoff had defended himself by saying the cannabis and fake firearms were planted to frame him.

In his statement, Razarudin also commended all reactions to Yusoff's acquittal.

"These views reflect a noble desire to ensure that the country's criminal justice system continues to uphold the principles of justice and human rights.

"Therefore, the Royal Malaysia Police is still waiting and will examine the full judgment of the trial to see if there are any gaps and weaknesses in the investigation that was done.

"The Royal Malaysia Police stands ready to improve its internal assessment and review the investigation standard operating procedure," he added.
