Anwar arrives in Jakarta, talks with Prabowo to deepen ties

Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Jakarta today for an official visit to Indonesia.

The aircraft carrying the prime minister and his delegation landed at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta at around 1pm local time, where he was personally received by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

Anwar, who was travelling in an official vehicle with Prabowo, was escorted by 75 mounted personnel from the Indonesian National Armed Forces and the Indonesian National Police.

Anwar was also greeted with waving flags and cheers from students lining the route to the palace, who held Malaysian and Indonesian flags. He was seen returning the gesture by waving back.

Upon arrival at Istana Merdeka, he was welcomed by Prabowo and escorted to the main stage for the official welcoming ceremony.

As Anwar and Prabowo stepped onto the main stage, the national anthems - Negaraku and Indonesia Raya - were played, accompanied by a 19-gun salute from the Presidential Security Force (Paspampres).

Prabowo then accompanied Anwar for an inspection of the guard of honour mounted by Paspampres.

The two leaders then introduced members of their respective cabinets, followed by a photo session and the signing of a guest book.

The Malaysian cabinet members in the delegation are Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan; Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz; Higher Education Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir; Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil; and Plantation and Commodities Minister Johari Abdul Ghani.

The programme continued with a four-eye meeting between Anwar and Prabowo, followed by an extended bilateral meeting involving ministers from both countries.

The visit comes as Malaysia holds the Asean chair for 2025, with Kuala Lumpur continuing to lead key regional agendas throughout the year.

At the meeting, the two leaders discussed key bilateral issues, followed up on recent Asean engagements, and explored ways to strengthen regional stability as Malaysia and Indonesia deepen their strategic cooperation.

The meeting also focused on trade, investment, education, communications, commodities, and regional affairs, in line with the ministerial portfolios represented in the Malaysian delegation.

The visit also forms part of preparations for the 13th Annual Malaysia–Indonesia Consultation, scheduled to take place at the end of the year.
