KLIA Aerotrain disrupted by rainfall, days after relaunch
Just days after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim launched the return of the KLIA Aerotrain Service, the airport shuttle operation has once again faced disruption, owing to heavy rainfall.
The late morning incident forced Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAHB) to ferry passengers to KLIA’s satellite terminal using their airside shuttle bus services.

According to the airport operator, the aerotrain service was temporarily suspended at 11am due to water accumulation in the tunnel caused by heavy rainfall.
“The tunnel’s drainage system includes pumps designed to handle water ingress during severe weather conditions.
“However, one of the drainage pumps experienced a technical fault during today’s heavy rainfall, preventing the automatic removal of accumulated water.
“As a safety precaution, train operations were suspended until the water was manually cleared and the tracks were confirmed safe for use.
“Service resumed at 12.15pm once full clearance was obtained from the technical and safety teams,” said the MAHB statement, adding that they are also working to rectify the water pump issue.
The Aerotrain, which has been the backbone of KLIA’s internal transport system since the airport opened in 1998, was suspended in March 2023 following a breakdown.
According to Bernama, the system has since undergone a RM456 million overhaul to replace its ageing fleet and infrastructure under MAHB’s RM742 million Airport Regeneration Plan, aimed at future-proofing one of the region’s busiest aviation hubs.
It resumed operation on Tuesday, featuring new three-car driverless units capable of transporting up to 270 passengers at speeds of 56kph.
