M'sia joins 11 countries cutting 'ties of complicity' with Israel

Malaysia was part of a coalition of countries that announced coordinated actions against Israel’s ongoing assaults on the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT).

The 12 countries unanimously agreed on measures designed to cut ties of complicity with Israel’s actions in Gaza.

“The measures include prohibiting the supply or transfer of arms, munitions, military fuel, and dual-use items to Israel, as well as preventing the docking and servicing of vessels transporting such items at national ports or under national flags.”

This was announced in a joint statement yesterday by the Colombian Foreign Ministry and the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

Other steps include reviewing all public contracts to avoid funding projects linked to Israel’s occupation, ensuring accountability for international crimes through investigations and prosecutions, and supporting universal jurisdiction to bring justice to victims in the OPT.

The 12 countries were Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Indonesia, Iraq, Libya, Malaysia, Namibia, Nicaragua, Oman, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and South Africa.

They pledged to immediately implement the measures through their national legal and administrative frameworks.

This decision was made during a two-day emergency conference in Bogota, Colombia, which saw the participation of 30 countries.

The statement noted that the participating states emphasised their commitment to take concrete action on Israel’s violations of international law, and invited other nations to adopt the measures ahead of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this September.

UN Special Rapporteur for Palestinian Human Rights, Francesca Albanese, said the 12 states have taken a momentous step forward, noting that “the clock is now ticking for states from Europe to the Arab world and beyond to join them.”

The statement added that the 30 states participating in the emergency conference unanimously agreed that the era of impunity must end, and that international law must be enforced without fear or favour through immediate domestic policies and legislation.

The group also called for an immediate ceasefire.
