Bukit Aman takes over UTM cadet's death probe

Bukit Aman has taken over the investigation into the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) student Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, who died after sustaining injuries during a Reserve Officer Training Unit (Rotu) training at an army camp in Johor.

This followed the Shah Alam High Court’s order yesterday for the exhumation of Syamsul's body for a second post-mortem.

"Police are giving a full commitment to abide by the order, and for the purpose of coordinating actions, the investigation will be taken over fully by the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department's Classified Investigations Unit," said department director M Kumar in a statement last night.

Syamsul died at the Kota Tinggi Hospital in Johor on July 28.

His family had suspected something was amiss after Syamsul's mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, saw injury marks on the victim's body.

She believed that her son’s death was caused by individuals involved in the Rotu training.
