Court acquits Papagomo of sedition over 'pro-Israel govt' claims

Blogger Papagomo has been acquitted of his sedition case, where he was charged last year over his claims that the government is pro-Israel. 

His lawyer, Rafique Rashid Ali, in confirming the acquittal to Malaysiakini today, said Sessions Court judge Siti Aminah Ghazali made the ruling after finding no prima facie case against Wan Azri Wan Deris, Papgomo’s real name. 

“After hearing evidence from nine witnesses and at the end of the prosecution’s case, the judge found they had failed to establish any prima facie against him.

“The judge therefore granted him discharge and acquittal,” Rafique said.

Meanwhile, deputy public prosecutor Mustaffa P Kunyalam said they are considering and studying the possibility of filing an appeal against the judgment.

Papagomo, 42, was initially charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, on Jan 8 last year, where he was accused of making the remark, which was posted on Nov 8, 2023, by a Facebook user Halid Hamidi (Halid Mat Kool).

The claim was then sighted by Bersatu member Hisham Sharudin, formerly from Umno, leading to his charge.

He was charged before judge N Priscilla Hemamalini, and the trial, which commenced around July last year, was heard before Siti Aminah.
