Bersatu leader wants probe into Hamzah 'broker' claims, warns of fallout

A Bersatu leader has urged the party’s leadership to investigate claims in a poison pen letter against its deputy president, Hamzah Zainudin. 

Stressing that the allegations made in the letter should not be taken lightly, Tasek Gelugor Bersatu division chief Azmi Alang said decisive action must be taken if the accusations are found to be legitimate.

In particular, he emphasised that the party cannot let slide claims that Hamzah (above) had acted as a “broker” who spearheaded the establishment of the Perikatan Nasional executive council. 

“We cannot outright reject the contents of this letter because it involves the party’s interests. 

“If the supreme council does not investigate the allegations, more speculation and accusations will emerge,” the Telok Ayer Tawar assemblyperson added in a statement today.

He said the party will only gain from investigating the letter, and that clearing the allegations against Hamzah will strengthen the party.

‘Irrelevant who wrote letter’

Azmi asserted that if a “broker” does exist within the opposition party, their identity and misdeeds should be detailed to party members. 

“If (the individual’s) actions amount to treachery, then the supreme council and the party’s disciplinary board must take firm action so that the party is not betrayed to the enemy.

“Brokers and traitors cannot be allowed to remain within the party and destroy it,” he said. 

He also drew comparisons with a previous instance where Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal revealed the contents of an anonymous letter relating to the sale of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd shares. 

“The main issue raised then was the contents of the letter. The question of who wrote it did not arise.

“The same applies to the issue of brokers within the party. This is a very serious matter,” Azmi stressed.

Plans to oust Muhyiddin

According to a copy of the poison pen letter sighted by Malaysiakini, the author claimed Hamzah was a “broker” who led the formation of the PN executive council. 

It also accused Hamzah of planning to oust party president Muhyiddin Yassin.

Recently, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirmed that PN officially formed a presidential council, comprising the heads of the opposition coalition’s four component parties.

While the presidential council would reportedly oversee the coalition, the executive council is expected to take on the task of “championing issues”.

Wan Fayhsal, who is also a Bersatu supreme council member, has cautioned that sending such letters when the party’s annual general meeting (AGM) approaches would only tarnish its image. 

He added that members should voice their grievances during party meetings.

Bersatu is scheduled to hold its AGM on Sept 6 and 7 at the Ideal Convention Centre, Shah Alam.
