Quizzed on govt's election prep, Fahmi jabs Bersatu over poison pen letter

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil avoided answering a question on the government’s preparations for upcoming elections and instead opted to take a swipe at apparent strife within Bersatu.

The government spokesperson remarked that Bersatu’s internal politics appear to be “very lively and dynamic”, in reference to a recently circulated poison pen letter against the opposition party’s deputy president, Hamzah Zainudin.

“I suggest they (Bersatu) focus on why anonymous letters are being circulated (as) politics of this sort is not good.

“My projection for Bersatu is that they should focus on their annual general assembly (AGM),” Fahmi said at a press conference today.

The PKR communications director said this when queried on the government’s preparations to face the 16th general election and the looming Sabah polls, amid moves by Bersatu to gear up for the contests.

Alleged plans to oust Muhyiddin

According to a copy of the poison pen letter sighted by Malaysiakini, the author accused Hamzah of planning to oust party president Muhyiddin Yassin.

It also claimed that Hamzah was the “broker” who spearheaded the move to establish the Perikatan Nasional executive council.

Recently, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirmed that PN officially formed a presidential council, comprising the heads of the opposition coalition’s four component parties.

While the presidential council would reportedly oversee the coalition, the executive committee is expected to take on the task of “championing issues”.

Bersatu supreme council member Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal cautioned that sending such letters when the AGM is approaching would only bring disrepute to the party’s image, adding that members should voice their grievances during party meetings.

Bersatu is scheduled to hold its AGM on Sept 6 and 7 at the Ideal Convention Centre, Shah Alam.
