AG: Decision on UTM cadet inquest pending police, hospital reports

The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) will decide whether to hold an inquest into Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin's death after receiving the full police report.

AG Dusuki Mokhtar said the police are still waiting on the hospital's report on the second post-mortem, which is expected to be completed within three months.

"The police have requested that the report, including the post-mortem, be expedited.

"The AGC will then determine whether an inquest will be held once the full investigation report, including the post-mortem findings and other related documents, is received," the New Straits Times quoted Dusuki as saying.

Syamsul, 22, passed away at the Kota Tinggi Hospital in Johor on July 28. He had undergone Reserve Officer Training Unit (Rotu) training before his death.

However, his mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, suspected foul play due to bruises on Syamsul’s body and bloodied eyes, which led to her lodging a police report.

Police initially said no criminal element was found in Syamsul’s death. But after Ummu sought a court order, his body was exhumed for a second post-mortem on Aug 29.

The second autopsy uncovered traumatic injuries that the family lawyer Naran Singh said warranted further investigation, alongside new evidence submitted to the authorities.
