Teresa: AGC should only appeal amount it has to pay to Koh, Amri families
Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has urged the government to limit the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ appeals on the High Court ruling over the disappearances of pastor Raymond Koh and activist Amri Che Mat to only the damages awarded.
She said it would be unbecoming to appeal the ruling that held the government and police liable for their disappearances.
“By appealing against liability, the government appears to be challenging the court’s factual and legal findings, which effectively implies that the police were right and the learned judge was wrong.
“This is inconsistent with the home minister’s announcement to reinvestigate the cases and raises serious questions about the government’s commitment to truth, transparency, and justice,” she said.
She urged the government to deliberate on the matter at the cabinet meeting today, with the preferred outcome being that the AGC does not file an appeal at all.
RM10k a day until found
Last week, judge Su Tiang Joo found the government and police liable for the disappearances of Koh and Amri.
Su ordered the police to reopen their investigations into both cases.

He also awarded RM3 million to Amri’s wife, Norhayati Ariffin, and RM6 million to Koh’s family.
In addition, the government is to pay RM10,000 per day for each day Koh has been missing since Feb 13, 2017, until he is found.
As of Nov 11, Koh has been missing for 3,193 days, meaning the government owes the Koh family RM31.93 million.
The AGC believes the judge had erred in his decision over the civil cases and will file an appeal.
Despite this, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced yesterday that police will comply with the court order to reopen investigations into Koh’s disappearance and find him.
