'Medical grads may use 'Dr' but cannot practise if not registered with MMC'

While there is no restriction on the usage of the doctor title for those who graduated with a medical degree from unrecognised universities, the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) stressed that it does not allow them to practise medicine in the country.

“Only those who comply with the Medical Act 1971 and regulations made under the provision are allowed to practise medicine in the country.

“For those who graduated from programmes not listed under the Second Schedule of the Medical Act 1971, they must comply with certain regulations if they wish to practise in Malaysia.

“This includes passing certain exams and undergoing post-graduate training at recognised Malaysian universities,” the council said in a statement.

MMC added that, in general, those who wish to practise medicine in Malaysia must be registered with the council and possess an Annual Practising Certificate.

PAS man wants Taufiq to explain ‘Dr’ title

This came after a PAS member questioned the new youth and sports minister over his use of the “Dr” prefix.

On Dec 21, PAS central information committee member Nurul Islam Yusoff urged Taufiq Johari to explain himself over the matter since Taufiq allegedly graduated from an unrecognised university.

Nurul Islam made the call after finding out that Taufiq was not registered with the MMC and had obtained his medical degree from Universitas Islam Bandung - which is not recognised by Malaysia, Malaysia Gazette reported.

He also urged Taufiq to clarify claims that the latter used to serve as a doctor at a clinic in Sungai Petani.
