Cops nab 4 over alleged abuse at unlicensed Selayang children's home

Four individuals linked to a children’s home in Taman Selayang Permata have been arrested after several underage residents were allegedly sexually abused over a prolonged period there.

According to the New Straits Times, the abuses - which had been ongoing for over a decade - were exposed after two former residents, who had recently turned 18, reported the mistreatment.

Those detained by the police include the 31-year-old operator of the home and a 17-year-old resident. The children’s home was also allegedly operated by a private company instead of the Social Welfare Department. 

Pertubuhan Kebangkitan Tiga Tangan Selangor president S Maran reportedly said that the episodes were not isolated incidents, but a systematic, repeated action that went undiscovered for a long time.

Maran added that his NGO filed a police report at the Gombak district police headquarters last Sunday, before visiting the home later that evening, under the guise of a birthday celebration.

Matters escalated after evidence allegedly linked to the abuse was found on the suspect’s phone.

“Our members started slowly questioning the residents. Some of the children began opening up. Several of them were able to point out the suspects.

“With the victims’ admissions and what we discovered, there was no longer any doubt. This is a genuine case. These children were abused,” he was quoted as saying.

According to the NST, to date, at least 10 police reports have been lodged against the home by NGOs, former residents, and parents.

Medical checks on the victims reportedly revealed injuries consistent with sexual assault, with some of the injuries believed to be recent, Maran was reported saying.

The victims, boys aged between nine and 17, are receiving treatment at Selayang Hospital.

“Since the arrest and exposé, our members have been spending more time at the home. We noticed that some of these children are living with trauma,” Maran said.

NST reported that Bukit Aman’s Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division D11 principal assistant director Siti Kamsiah Hassan confirmed the arrests and that investigations are underway.
