SNAPSHOT | Cops seize Perlis MB's shotgun over cow shooting; Perlis ruler launches free-trade zone

Cow shooting

• The police have confiscated a shotgun and nine cartridges in the probe over the shooting of a cow by Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah.

  Kangar police chief Yusharifuddin Yusop said in a statement today that the shotgun was legally registered to the Bersatu lawmaker, who holds a valid firearms licence.

  

  According to a report from Malay Mail, Yusharifuddin said police have recorded Abu Bakar’s statement in the investigation under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960 for the discharge of a firearm in a public area.

  The offence is punishable with a maximum jail term of one year, a fine not exceeding RM2,000, or both.

Infrastructure Development 

• The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, graced and officiated the launch of the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Free Trade Zone-Perlis Inland Port (PIP) in Padang Besar today.

  Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said the development of PIP as a free trade zone was not merely a symbol of physical development but a strategic step towards strengthening Perlis’ and Malaysia’s position as a regional trade and logistics gateway, anchored on intra-Asia land transportation, particularly the Pan-Asia railway network.

  

  “I am confident that this free trade zone will serve as a catalyst for new economic growth, create investment opportunities, strengthen cross-border trade, and boost the logistics and industrial sectors in northern Peninsular Malaysia, while contributing to the country’s gross domestic product,” the state monarch said in his royal address, according to Bernama.

  Citing Perlis’ strategic location bordering Thailand and along a key Asean trade route, he also urged the federal government to prioritise strategic investments towards further accelerating the state's economic growth. 

• Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said rapid growth in Sabah’s development and tourism sector has surpassed earlier projections, prompting the federal government to expedite infrastructure upgrades, particularly at Kota Kinabalu International Airport.

  He said the significant increase in tourist arrivals to the state has created an urgent need to improve and expand existing facilities.

  

  “Under normal projections, there would be no need to expand infrastructure at such a pace.

  “However, Sabah’s growth has surpassed normal projections and recorded development that is truly commendable,” he said when launching the state-level Kaamatan Festival 2026 at Hongkod Koisaan, Kadazandusun Cultural Association in Penampang today.

Rail transportation

• Four LRT carriages that derailed near Chan Sow Lin Station recently have been successfully placed back on the tracks and transported to the depot for inspection and further action by the technical team.

  In a Facebook post today, Rapid KL said recovery works carried out yesterday and in the early hours of this morning involved reconnecting the train carriages to a specialised track vehicle to enable their safe and controlled removal from the site.

  

  “Efforts are being intensified to ensure safe and comfortable journeys for passengers can be restored as quickly as possible,” the post said.

  On Thursday, a train on the Ampang/Sri Petaling Line derailed near Chan Sow Lin Station due to a fault in a track switch, disrupting service schedules.

  Yesterday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the affected section of track is expected to resume operations by next Wednesday at the latest.

• The government is examining effective methods, including monitoring technology, to address the widespread theft of railway cables, which Loke described as a major issue, especially in the northern region, which disrupts operations.

  

  “It cannot be seen as normal theft cases because they disrupt our services and can even affect public safety.

  “This is a national security and state security issue because the theft of these cables has caused significant disruptions to our services and poses a danger to the public,” he said in Padang Besar, Perlis. 

Aidilhadha, haj excellence

• Some 2,000 residents of seven Orang Asli villages in Ulu Kinta benefited from an Aidiladha qurban programme following the contribution of eight cows by Prime Minister and Tambun MP Anwar.

  According to Bernama, Anwar’s parliamentary special officer Hairul Amir Sabri said the programme was organised by the Community Service Centre in collaboration with the Department of Orang Asli Development.

  

  He said the initiative was part of ongoing efforts to ensure the Orang Asli community in the parliamentary constituency could also share in the Aidiladha celebration and benefit from the distribution of sacrificial meat.

  The programme involved the Orang Asli community from Kampung Makmur, Kampung Tonggang, Kampung Chadak, Kampung Suluh, Kampung Suak Petai, Kampung Choh, and Kampung Baduk.

  Overall, Hairul said Anwar had contributed 170 cows for distribution throughout Tambun in conjunction with Aidiladha this year.

• Anwar congratulated Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) on receiving the Labbaitom Award from the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Haj and Umrah for the fifth consecutive time.

  In a Facebook post today, he said the achievement recognises Malaysia’s excellence in the management and welfare of haj pilgrims.

  

  “This success reflects the commitment, professionalism and dedication of all TH personnel and haj officers, who consistently strive to provide the best services in managing Malaysian pilgrims,” he said.

  Anwar also congratulated Amal by Malaysia Airlines, which received the Misk Al-Khitam Award in recognition of its excellence in managing arrival procedures for pilgrims during the 1447H haj season.
