Glasgow 2026: Azizulhasni's first Commonwealth gold provides day's highlight for M'sia

Malaysia continued its medal surge at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as track cycling star Azizulhasni Awang delivered the nation’s seventh gold medal after dominating the men’s keirin final yesterday.

The victory at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome marked the highlight of Malaysia’s campaign on the day, with Azizulhasni securing his first Commonwealth Games gold in his final appearance at the multi-sport event.

The 38-year-old Terengganu-born rider displayed his experience and tactics to overcome younger rivals with greater raw power, celebrating an emotional victory after crossing the finish line.

The medal matched Malaysia’s seven-gold haul at Birmingham 2022, despite Glasgow 2026 featuring a reduced programme and excluding several traditional medal-winning sports for the country, including badminton, diving, squash, and rhythmic gymnastics.

Earlier, women’s track cyclist Nurul Izzah Izzati Asri narrowly missed out on a medal in the women’s sprint, finishing fourth after losing 0-2 to Welsh rider Rhian Edmunds in the bronze medal playoff.

Medal winners

Malaysia’s weightlifting team emerged as the country’s biggest medal contributor, ending its campaign with five golds, one silver, and one bronze at the Scottish Event Campus Armadillo.

The Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) also received the Trafalgar Trophy for the first time after the national men’s team was named the best men’s weightlifting squad at the Games.

The five weightlifting gold medals came through Aniq Kasdan, Aznil Bidin, Erry Hidayat, Hafizuddin Roslin, and Syahmi Nor Ghazali.

Two more gold medals were won by para long jumper Abdul Latif Romly in the men’s T20 event and Azizulhasni in the men’s keirin.

Malaysia’s three silver medals came from Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple in the men’s lawn bowls singles, Aleena Ahmad Nawawi and Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman in the women’s pairs, and Siti Aqilah.

The three bronze medals were secured by Bonnie Bunyau Gustin in para powerlifting, Irene in weightlifting, and Eljoe Gotuoh in the men’s T20 long jump.

Target surpassed

The latest results lifted Malaysia’s tally to seven gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, surpassing the initial 5-2-4 target set before the Games.

The medal count could still rise, with Azizulhasni set to compete in the men’s sprint and 1,000m time trial, alongside other remaining track cycling events.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will conclude on Sunday.

Australia remained top of the medal standings with 55 gold, 30 silver, and 43 bronze medals, followed by England (17-34-29) and Canada (17-15-21). Malaysia sits at eighth.
