Nurul Izzah reiterates intention to quit post, calls Saifuddin 'deputy president'

PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar has confirmed her intention to step down from the party’s number two post, conveyed to the central leadership, which earlier today granted her temporary leave instead.

“After careful reflection, I have conveyed my intention to step down from my position as deputy president of PKR.

“My commitment to serving the rakyat and our communities remains undiminished, and I intend to continue that service beyond the confines of any single office or title,” she said on Facebook, several hours after PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil announced the outcome of the council meeting.

Earlier, Fahmi said the council had discussed Nurul Izzah’s request to step down.

However, after hearing her views and those of other party leaders, they granted her temporary leave beginning after the PKR National Congress on Aug 14 and 15.

Fahmi also mentioned that PKR vice-president Saifuddin Nasution Ismail will assume the deputy president’s responsibilities during Nurul Izzah’s absence.

Nurul Izzah’s Facebook post did not mention her status as going on temporary leave.

She also referred to Saifuddin as PKR deputy president, rather than as her temporary successor.

“I have full confidence that Saifuddin, as deputy president, and Amirudin Shari, as election director, will carry these responsibilities forward with wisdom, integrity and dedication, remaining faithful to the hopes and aspirations of the people.

“I pray that they are granted strength and ease in the trust now placed upon them,” said Nurul Izzah, who also indicated her plans outside of politics.

“This decision follows long and careful consideration. It marks a new chapter in my life, one grounded in service and devotion, as I turn towards further studies and commitments that lie beyond the political arena.”

Will remain a PKR member

The former MP stressed that she would remain a PKR member and continue supporting the party under the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“I remain a member of PKR and pledge my full support to the party’s continuing struggle for a better Malaysia under the leadership of Anwar, alongside the party leadership and its grassroots,” said the former Permatang Pauh lawmaker.

Nurul Izzah also thanked party members and leaders for their support.

“InsyaAllah, we will meet at the PKR National Congress on Aug 14 and 15,” she added.

Nurul Izzah was elected PKR deputy president in May last year after defeating then-incumbent Rafizi Ramli.
