Yeoh denies signing Najib's house arrest order, calls document fake

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has denied signing a house arrest order for imprisoned former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, saying the document circulating on social media is fake.
“I have never signed a house arrest order such as the one currently circulating on social media. The Pardons Board has yet to convene.
“Please do not circulate this fake document. My press secretary has lodged a report with the authorities,” she said in a social media post late last night.
Earlier, Yeoh’s press secretary Ahmad Fazli Yadi also denied that the minister had signed the letter, describing it as slander.
“I deny that it is the official signature (of Yeoh on the document), and it is clear this is pure slander. It is not Yeoh’s signature.
“I will file a report with authorities soon,” he said on Threads.
The circulation of the letter, which also bore a “royal seal”, comes amid a news report that the Federal Territories Pardons Board is scheduled to reconvene today (Sept 18) to consider Najib’s application, just a week after the matter was deferred.

Najib's application postponed
Following the previous meeting, the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented to defer Najib’s application to the board’s next meeting.
At the same meeting, the Agong also consented to the release of 65 prisoners, with non-citizens to be deported to their countries of origin within six months.
On Wednesday, Yeoh said any views she had expressed concerning Najib during the previous Pardons Board meeting were made with the nation’s interests in mind.
"I have stated my views honestly, guided by my conscience, and with the best interests of the nation in mind. In accordance with Article 42 of the Federal Constitution, the authority and final decision rest with the Agong, including the decision to defer Najib's pardon bid," she said.
The possibility of Najib’s application being considered has also triggered a war of words between Pakatan Harapan and Umno.
This followed a statement by the Harapan presidential council which, without naming anyone, said individuals convicted of corruption or abuse of power, particularly in high-profile cases, should serve the full sentences handed down by the courts.
Najib began serving a 12-year prison term in 2022 after being convicted in the SRC International corruption case. In 2024, the Pardons Board halved his sentence and reduced the RM210 million fine to RM50 million.
In December last year, Najib was convicted of corruption for a second time and sentenced to 15 years in jail over the 1MDB case, together with an RM11.38 billion fine, which he will serve after completing his SRC sentence.

A lesson in how dangerous fake news is. I saw it on social media and it looked so authentic. Probably created by AI. Having said that I think that one should be prepared that Najib will get some concession. Hannah Yeoh has stated her piece and ultimately it is the YDPA who will decide this. Before all the netizens come for me to say that the YDPA acts on the advice of the minister I do not think the law is that clear. Even if it was it makes no difference. This is a unity government and the government will not be able to come to an agreed position. I think the best that could be achieved is that both sides to the argument will just defer to the YDPA's decision as it gives cover to either side. For UMNO or PH (especially DAP) it was the YDPA who decided. Bear in mind the "house arrest" option was considered at that time to merit "mercy" by the former YDPA in an addendum but was not upheld because of due process. The current YDPA might out of respect of his brother king (and brother in law) perfect that process. Naturally not something that personally I am happy with but bear in mind corruption has been the bane of Malaysia. Many vested interest from low to high positioned past and present have benefited from it looking at Najib is like looking in the mirror and for many Najib getting off is something they feel strongly about emotionally as it speaks about themselves too. That is just my personal view. In the end I think the safest course is just to let the YDPA decide and let it be.
I trust Hannah Yeoh. I will support her anytime.
