Mandiri executive director Amir Hariri Abdul Hadi and finance director Dobby Chew have been released from police custody just before midnight last night.

The duo from the youth-led NGO were arrested on Tuesday to facilitate a probe under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla) and then remanded for three days.

According to a post on Mandiri’s Facebook account, Amir (above, right) and Chew (above, left) walked out from the Kuala Lumpur police centralised lock-up facility in Jinjang about 11.50pm.

“Freedom! Three days in Jinjang lock-up.

“We will continue the fight tomorrow,” Amir said in a separate posting two hours after release.

It was understood that police were investigating Mandiri Development Centre Sdn Bhd, a company under the NGO, for allegedly receiving funds suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities between 2024 and 2026.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said on Wednesday that an investigation paper was opened on Sept 10 after a police report was lodged based on a review of the company’s funds.

Meanwhile, Mandiri is also planning a street demonstration related to the issue this Sunday.

According to their media invitation, the “Corporate Mafia and Hands Off NGO” protest will be held in front of the Sogo shopping complex at 3pm. 

Mandiri said the protest will put forward three main demands: to urge authorities to arrest the “corporate mafia”, to call upon the government not to silence the people’s voice, and to free political prisoners.
