Mongolian rape case
A case that grabbed headlines during MCO 1.0 was a police officer who stopped two Mongolian women at a roadblock, brought them to a hotel, then allegedly raped them repeatedly.
Now in MCO 2.0, the case is under the spotlight again.
The court threw out one of the victims’ civil suit against the alleged rapist. Reason: She couldn’t afford an RM70,000 security deposit.
The alleged rapist asked for the money to be deposited with the court, considering she is a foreigner, to cover costs in the event she loses.
Women activists are worried this sends the wrong signal and want the court to reconsider. The former police officer is also facing criminal charges.

Challenging developers
Kuala Lumpur residents fighting to keep their park scored a major victory after the Court of Appeal quashed the approval to develop Taman Rimba Kiara.
The park was to be jointly developed by a private developer and Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan, an affiliate of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) which approved the project.
The court cited a conflict of interest.
Meanwhile, another battle is heating up against attempts to de-gazette the Kuala Langat forest reserve for development by a royalty-linked firm.
Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said negotiations will take another month but he is facing pressure from his own party to scrap the project.
