Najib turns to the UN for help
Describing his detention as “arbitrary”, Najib Abdul Razak is seeking the United Nations’ intervention.
The former prime minister is asking the UN Human Rights Council Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD) experts on international justice to rule that the Federal Court’s decision to dismiss his appeal was flawed and unjust.
On Aug 23 last year, the apex court upheld Najib’s conviction and sentence in the SRC International corruption case. He is currently serving his 12-year jail term in the Kajang Prison.
Najib’s application to review the judicial verdict, which his daughter Nooryana Najwa had described as his last shot at freedom, is set for hearing before a new quorum of the Federal Court on Jan 19.
Nooryana also requested the Anwar Ibrahim-led government to permit a live broadcast of the proceedings.

Ismail Sabri’s sartorial defence
Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has cried foul over claims that he had participated in the purported “London Move” to chart the ouster of the new government.
Sharing a photograph of his vacation with Malaysiakini, the Umno vice-president claimed that he was in a sunnier location during the time of the alleged meeting in London in the dead of winter.
“I was vacationing with my family in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. We visited Warner Bros (theme park) in Abu Dhabi.
"Wouldn’t I wear winter clothing if I were in London?” he asked.
Ismail Sabri complained that he is a victim of slander despite keeping a low profile since the last general election.

Cop charged with raping teenaged rape victim
A police inspector was charged in Kedah with rape and three counts of sexual assault involving a 16-year-old girl.
Mohd Maliki Azmi, 35, is accused of committing the offences at about 6.30pm on Dec 28 last year in a criminal investigations room at the Yan District police headquarters.
For the charge under Section 376(2)(f) of the Penal Code (Act 574), Maliki faces up to 20 years in prison and whipping, upon conviction.
In addition, the accused was also slapped with three separate charges under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792) for committing sexual assault on the same victim.
The victim had gone to meet the inspector to have her statement recorded on her claim of rape by her stepfather when Maliki himself allegedly raped her.
Maliki claimed trial to the charges.

Other news that matter
Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) is the latest to criticise the move to charge foreigners a 90 sen fare for using the free PJ City Bus service, noting that it would further burden underpaid migrant workers.
LFL called the move ”bigoted”.
