Whether you are just stepping into the working world, looking for a career change, or even if you are just hustling right now, the question “What career is right for me?” has or will cross your mind. While it is a difficult question to answer, ikigai may help you realise how you can make a living meaningfully.
What is ikigai?
The term ikigai (ee-kee-guy) is composed of two japanese words “iki” which translates to “life” and “kai” (voiced as “gai”) which describes value or worth. Although there is no direct translation for ikigai in English, it is essentially what gets you up in the morning and keeps you going.
It is where your passions and talents converge with the things that the world needs and is willing to pay for.

Finding your ikigai
A career is more than just your day job, it includes other actions that you make throughout your working life - hobbies, side hustles, volunteering etc. Of course, it would be best if your job fits into all four qualities of ikigai but if it does not, try exploring new things, meeting new people, expanding your horizons - until you can answer all of the following questions with a solid yes.

If you are planning out your career or unhappy with your current job, go back to basics and list down the things that can fulfil each of the four ikigai qualities and observe if they fit any job description. Pursuing ikigai might take longer than expected but it will be worth it. Having the right career creates a state of mind that can transform your life forever!
If you need more help to assess which career path to venture into, we have some career quizzes here that might be of interest to you!
Check out this speech by Tim Tamashiro whom delights us with a journey into the discovery of ikigai.
