I refer to Harry Lee's letter Education system needs urgent overhaul . I must point out that Lee's recommendations may not be straight to the point.
Recently, a local newspaper reported that the breakdown of unemployed local graduates by race was bumiputeras, 78 percent, Chinese, 18 percent and Indians at two percent. This means that there is a correlation between unemployment and race.
Lee feels that the education system should be revamped entirely. The question is - will churning out better grads improve the unemployment figures if employers select by criterium other than education level and experience?
There is also a tendency for some employers to select according to language competency, especially Mandarin. I think we must be honest with ourselves if we want to solve the present unemployed graduates situation.
