Your columnist Azly Rahman's writing is quite interesting although for the layman's mind, it is a bit too much especially when he quotes those numerous great thinkers of the past. What he has successfully done is to show us all how widely read he is which, in itself, is most admirable.

However, his education has perhaps caused him to smell a rat in every hole and an agenda behind every meeting. It is obvious to all that Anwar Ibrahim had made many close alliances with world leaders during his tenure in government office.

His visiting them all now is merely an attempt at renewing and rekindling past alliances for future support. What Anwar has said - and I agree wholeheartedly - is that nobody has a monopoly on the idea of human rights and the rule of law and democracy.

The founding fathers of America, who birthed the idea of equal rights for all, would roll over in their graves if they were to see what liberal America is today. All I am saying is that I do not want an executive or a government which is accountable to nobody.

A system of governance that has no checks and balances and a consolidation of power under an elite group of people or party is dangerous. Perhaps I'm asking for Utopia, but we should strive for a system of governance wherein there is an independent judiciary, parliament and executive such that even the executive could be charged or brought to justice for abusing or breaking the law.

The people should have freedom of expression as to who they want in government and the freedom to think clearly and decide on that without any form of media or information suppression. Call it whatever you like - democracy, socialism, communism, Anwarism, Wolfowism etc. - if it can achieve what I can only dream of for Malaysia, then so be it.

There again, I may just be a Malaysian secretly subscribing to the New American Century and the Wolfowitz doctrine and waiting for the day Anwar will open the floodgates and allow America to influence us for a 'better' life.
