‘The Semang have a deep ancestry within the Malay Peninsula, dating to the initial settlement from Africa more than 50,000 years ago.’

My Semang elders,

No politician bangs the podium on your behalf.

No one notices that the land gazetted for you shrinks every other year.

I have not gone to the streets to fight for your rights.

I know none of your names.

My ancestors deemed you as untouchables; and there are some that still do.

Your menfolk were killed, and your women and children brought into slavery by the kings of this land, in years gone by.

We do nothing to help you safeguard your ancient tongues.

We allow the official policy of assimilation to go on, and do nothing about it.

You, that should stand at the forefront, and enjoy the wealth and glory of this nation, are nowhere to be seen.

I am sorry, that despite the outcome on March 8, your lot will change little.

I am sorry that I cant' apologise for all the wrongs, and that I can't apologise on behalf of all Malaysians.

I am sorry that my attempt here is woeful, and does no justice to what you deserve, and to what you have suffered.

I am sorry for my ignorance.
