With three days to go before polling, the fever is running high in Manek Urai which will witness PAS and Umno locking horns in the by-election.

PAS has entrusted Mohd Fauzi Abdullah or affectionately known ‘Abe Uji’ to defend the seat while Umno and BN has placed its trust on Tuan Aziz Tuan Mat.

There are 12,293 voters of which 99.2 percent are Malays, 0.46 are Chinese and 0.23 percent Indians. There are also 25 postal voters.

Malaysiakini speaks to several voters to get their take on the upcoming contest.

Kelly Pang, 25

Certainly, I want to change to 'daching' (Barisan Nasional). I want to see more infrastructure development, like schools proper drainage within this kampung and better roads.

The roads here are narrow and had been built during (former deputy premier) Ghafar Baba's time. We also want an elected representative who is close to the people. Despite, being a minority group here, we do not feel isolated as we are all Malaysians right.

Md Rudin Yaacob, 52

I came back from Kuala Lumpur and took a one week leave to see this by-election and to cast my vote. Certainly, we have seen an intense campaign period as this is a by-election, with both sides wanting to extend their influence. I know the PAS candidate as I have worked as a fish monger before. He is a nice and religious man. Unfortunately, I do not know the Umno/BN candidate. What we want in an elected representative with true capabilities. That is what we are asking for. I know there will be many people from outside Manek Urai who will come back to vote.

Noriah Mad, 48

We want an elected representative who understands the people, who knows our difficulties and predicaments. I am looking for someone who could bring more development in Manek Urai. However, I feel Abe Uji is working for the rakyat as I have seen him many times here. I agree that development is important but, this must be supplemented with strong spiritual values. I also know the BN candidate Tuan Aziz. He is nice, but I do not think he is suitable as being a manager, you may not be close to the people.

Mohd Rafi Mustafa, 31

I have cast votes for the past two general election and this is the third time. I agree that the young people need a lot of development, as many chose to leave their kampungs as they could not find jobs here. I do not know Abe Uji (PAS candidate) but I know Tuan Aziz. Tuan Aziz has the right qualifications since education is important to lead the people. Furthermore, he has come to my kampung and is very friendly. He (Tuan Aziz) is a man of integrity.

Che Rosri Che Rahman, 30

I feel that Tok Su Weil (previous assemblyperson Ismail Yaacob) and the Kelantan government have not done anything much for Manek Urai. We are lagging behind in terms of development and job opportunities. There is also not much public facilities. For example, in this Kampung Lata Rek, I truly feel there is a need for a football field for the children and youth to play in the afternoon. Hence, I will vote for a change (BN).

Saripah Salleh, 50

I feel having a good education is vital in a candidate as we want someone who is willing to help us and look after our affairs. Of course we would like to see better roads and certainly want to see a change for the better.

Mohd Jusoh Maidin, 52

We want a candidate who continues to uplift Islam and Malay unity. At the same time, we want an elected representative who is able to look after our well-being and comfort. For me the assemblyperson's education is not important. What is vital is that he has proper belief in Islam and is pious.

Wan Saidah Wan Rahim, 25

I agree there should be more development in Manek Urai and the starting point is the need for better and wider roads and another bridge replacing the one-lane bridge. Such basic needs is vital for this constituency's development.

Che Mi Bakar, 75

We need an elected representative who can contribute to the rakyat. We also need a wider bridge connecting us from Manek Urai Baru to Manek Urai Lama. When you are an elected representative you need to provide efficient service to the public.
